Grief Counseling

grief and loss counseling in Virginia

Dealing with loss is an inevitable part of life, but it’s easier said than done. Fortunately, you don’t have to grapple with your feelings of heartache by yourself. MySpectrum Counseling & Coaching offers grief and loss counseling that can help you heal your emotional wounds caused by losing someone or something special in your life. Whether it’s the death of a loved one, the dissolution of a relationship, or some other traumatic experience, we will be there to give you the guidance you need to move beyond the pain and keep it from standing in the way of the rest of your life.

We provide individual and family grief counseling in Virginia no matter where you live in the state. Our home office is in North Chesterfield, and we have another location opening soon in Springfield. If you aren’t comfortable with in-person care or can’t fit it into your schedule, we also provide online grief counseling through our teletherapy options. These allow you to speak with our compassionate and experienced therapists and receive virtual grief counseling in the comfort of your home or wherever you are. Online therapy related to grief and loss can be especially helpful because the grief and loss might be so intense that you can’t imagine actually going out and seeing someone in person. Through the virtual therapy option, you can meet with a Therapist someplace that is safe and calming for you.

What You May Be Experiencing

Everyone processes challenges in their own individual way. Regardless of what form it takes, suffering a painful change in your life can make it difficult to get through the day. For example, those who are grieving may experience:

  • Anger over what they feel is unfair or undeserved

  • Loneliness caused by feelings of isolation from others

  • Survivor’s guilt

  • Fear about what might happen next

  • Denial and an inability to move on

  • Depression and sadness

  • Intense longing for life to return to normal, or what you remember it to be

FAQs

Is grief counseling only for recent loss, or can it help with long-term or delayed grief?

Grief counseling helps with both recent and long-standing grief. Many people seek support months or years after a loss when emotions resurface or feel unresolved.

How do I know if what I’m feeling is normal grief or something that needs professional support?

If grief feels overwhelming, doesn’t improve over time, or affects your daily functioning, therapy can help you process emotions safely and regain stability.

What if I don’t feel ready to talk about the loss? Can I still start grief counseling?

Yes. A therapist will move at your pace. You can start with lighter conversations until you feel comfortable opening up.

Is it normal to feel “numb” after a loss, and can therapy help with that?

Yes, emotional numbness is common. Therapy helps you reconnect with your feelings gradually and healthily process them.

What if I’m grieving a loss that others don’t understand or recognize?

Therapy can help with “disenfranchised grief,” where your loss feels invisible or invalidated by others, such as loss of a pet, job, relationship, or life role.

Do you offer weekend therapy appointments?

Yes. Weekend sessions are available by appointment based on clinician availability.

What our clients say

  • I really appreciate MySpectrum because they took my child on as a patient when I couldn't get any other practice to return my call. They returned my call promptly and did all they could to help us. We did Teletherapy and it worked very well. My child preferred Teletherapy over in person.
